Accounting Manager/ Assistant Controller

We are looking for an Accounting Manager for a Boston based investment firm in Portfolio Accounting. This is an excellent opportunity for the person who would appreciate the benefits of working in the dynamic environment of a very successful firm. This position will be a member of the 7-person Portfolio Accounting team which is responsible for investment accounting, expense allocations, NAV calculations, and partner income allocations for eleven partnerships.


  • Management of two or three Portfolio Accountants

  • Understand both the U.S. tax and GAAP treatments of accounting entries

  • Oversee the private investment, investor allocations, and partnership expense accounting processes

  • Review monthly partnership net asset values and returns

  • Research and review GAAP accounting pronouncements

  • Oversee the audit process and preparation of annual GAAP financial statements

  • Design scalable, repeatable, and adaptable processes through personal automation or spreadsheets and/or by collaborating with IT teams on broader applications

  • Act as a liaison to the other operational teams

  • Perform and delegate other special projects as requested

Candidates should possess the following characteristics and qualifications:

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree, preferably in accounting or finance with a minimum of 7-10 years of relevant experience

  • Proven successful management experience required

  • Experience with complex portfolios holding diverse private assets required; experience with real estate investments is a plus

  • CPA or advanced business or finance degree preferred, but not required

  • Strong critical thinking and problem solving ability

  • Commitment to excellence and pride in work product

  • Ability to perform technical research and writing and to implement those ideas into actionable processes that are both scalable and repeatable

  • Strong computer skills, particularly Excel; familiarity with programming languages or ability to create macros is a plus

  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment with personnel throughout every level of the company

  • Desire to work in the details while also having the ability to understand a more macro perspective

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize work assignments effectively

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and documentation skills
