Portfolio Accounting Analyst

FIRM OVERVIEW:

This firm is a Boston-based investment manager with a long-term, value-oriented approach has an opening for an Accounting Analyst on the Portfolio Accounting team. Since founding, the firm has been thoughtfully stewarding and compounding capital on behalf of families, foundations and endowments, as well as employees who collectively are the firm’s largest client. The firm manages with a broad and flexible charter, investing in a wide range of asset classes, including significant holdings in publicly traded debt and equity securities, private debt, real estate, and private equity.

 

The ideal candidate for the role should possess the following characteristics and qualifications:

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree, preferably in accounting, finance, or mathematics with at least four years of relevant experience

  • Experience in accounting for, or auditing, investment companies; familiarity with complex investment portfolios holding diverse asset types a plus

  • Understanding of the U.S. tax and GAAP treatments of accounting entries for a broad range of asset classes and investment structures; working knowledge of IFRS and Luxembourg GAAP a plus

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and documentation skills

  • Commitment to excellence and pride in work product

  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving; ability to work in the details, while also connecting the work to the broader, more macro perspective

  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment collaborating with colleagues throughout the firm

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize work assignments effectively

  • Ability to conduct technical research, synthesize learnings, and make recommendations based on those learnings to create scalable and repeatable team processes

  • Strong technical skills, particularly Excel; familiarity with programming languages or ability to create macros a plus

 

This position will be a member of a Portfolio Valuations, Accounting & Reporting team which is responsible for investment valuations, accounting, NAV calculations, and partner income allocations for eleven partnerships.

 

Essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Own the full breadth of analysis and reporting for a particular asset class or range of investment structures in Baupost’s investment portfolio (e.g. public equity, debt, private equity, real estate, special purpose vehicles), including reviewing fund administrator books and records, maintaining internal shadow books and records, reviewing and interpreting complex investment structure legal and/or partnership documents and analyzing large data sets for internal, external, and/or regulatory reports/filings

  • Research GAAP accounting pronouncements or GAAP treatments related to assigned asset classes (or special purpose vehicles) and oversee annual audit and financial statement preparation for those funds

  • Ensure GAAP and U.S. tax accounting entries are accurate and liaising with internal and external teams to ensure alignment; some asset classes may also require working knowledge of IFRS and/or Luxembourg GAAP

  • Collaborate across Operations teams (e.g. Valuations, Tax, Transaction Structuring) to recommend process improvements via automation, streamlined templates, or internal IT systems; understand up- and downstream impacts of changes across Valuation, Accounting, and Reporting workflows.

  • Use critical thinking and independent judgment to review and recommend partnership expense allocations across the funds per firm policies and procedures

  • Independently research and complete other projects as requested, including reporting to the CFO

Other Details:

  • This firm is currently transitioning to a hybrid working model. Employees are in the office 2 days/week with the current intention of eventually being in the office 3 days/week.
